“I can achieve what I want to now. My condition doesn’t dominate my life – it doesn’t define who I am.”
I have been using the Scoliosis Suit for about 3 years now. It’s just brilliant! I have strength and energy and can get on with my life. Before, I couldn’t dress or lift things. I felt my condition was stopping me from doing things.
Working with Martin was great. I learnt a lot more about my condition through DM Orthotics and what could be done for me. It became a lot more personal – the education and the explanation of the mechanics of the suit and what it does, gives you a clearer picture of what your treatment will entail. You really feel like you are talking to someone who is really listening to you, your problems and what you want to be able to do with your life.
I was extremely excited when I saw the suit for the first time – it was so small I wondered how I was going to get into it. It was a little strange at first and threw my balance. Martin reassured me that this was the precise result we were after – the suit was working in the right way, re-aligning my spine and training my muscles to act in a new and corrected way. I soon got used to it, it just feels like another layer of skin.
I found it really positive that the Lycra makes you use your muscles unlike a structured brace and it doesn’t affect your appearance, which can be really important as a teenager – you don’t think about your condition so much.
Combined with physiotherapy, the Scoliosis Suit has enabled me to stand more upright, improved my balance and given me greater confidence.
Wearing the suit meant I could become more independent and I feel that I have more control over my condition. I can achieve what I want to now. My condition doesn’t dominate my life – it doesn’t define who I am.
Jo – Chloe’s Mum
“It was amazing to see the pain leave her face.”
Chloe was diagnosed with Scoliosis at the age of 11 and at the time there was very little information available about the condition. We saw a spinal surgeon and were told that there were no alternative treatments and that surgery would be the only option once Chloe got older.
We searched for something that could help Chloe as she was in so much pain. She had physiotherapy for a period of time but they recognised that they were not specialists in Scoliosis. I found DM Orthotics later, through someone whose son had been receiving Lycra Orthosis treatment for a different condition and rang Martin. He was extremely supportive about Chloe’s situation and agreed to meet.
Working with Martin on such a personal level was an amazing experience for us. He recognised that Chloe’s needs were unique. For the first time we felt listened to – we felt we could trust Martin and his team and what they were hoping to do.
The Scoliosis Suit has had an amazing effect on Chloe’s life. It was amazing to see the pain leave her face when she was supported by the suit – as a parent, you never want to see your child suffer and it was fantastic to see her able to return to doing normal things like getting dressed. She now leads a really active lifestyle and has been able to continue with her hobbies of ballet, tap dancing and drama. We are very proud of her.

“In the near future she will no longer require the suit, and her surgeon has said she will not require surgery.”
Chloe came to see me quite late on – she was 13 years old and had been diagnosed one year earlier. She was the first Idiopathic Scoliosis patient (where the spine suffers from sideways curvature and also twisted rotation) I had seen referred for a scoliosis suit. Her spine had a 50 degree curve, which made this a fairly complicated case – to put this into context, most patients I have seen with Scoliosis will be braced in a rigid brace, which is only effective for curves up to 45 degrees.
Chloe’s love of ballet meant that she needed to be very mobile, so we used a Scoliosis Suit with specially designed panels which resulted in preventing the progression of the curve in her spine and also reduced the rotation.
Ultimately this would make Chloe stand more upright and reduce a lot of the pain she was in. In the near future she will no longer require the suit, and her surgeon has said she will not require surgery.
