Gill Nicholls has been a client of DM Orthotics for over four years. She has a condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) which effects the connective tissues in her body.
Connective tissues provide support in skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs, and bones and when they don’t function properly EDS suffers can experience unusually flexible joints and skin that stretches and breaks easily.
Gill has the hypermobile type of EDS which means her joints are loose and unstable and can dislocate easily causing severe pain. It is an extreme type of EDS and means every joint in her body skeleton can regularly dislocate. Other symptoms include extreme tiredness and fatigue, digestive problems, dizziness, and mobility issues all of which can be very life limiting. Gill is in constant pain and unable to work or lead a normal life.
Before Gill got in touch with DM Orthotics, she was struggling to do anything that would allow her to lead a normal life. Working with her therapist she was exploring the possibility of finding an exoskeleton style solution that would work to keep her ribs, shoulders, elbows, and knees in place to reduce the dislocations.
After consultations with one of our DMO® Clinical Specialists and carefully taking exact measurements, we provided Gill with a full-length custom-made suit. The DMO® custom suit is a dynamic movement orthosis (DMO®) designed to aid the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and postural conditions. The design gives a non-restrictive and highly effective level of support to maximise postural stability aiding distal control and positively influencing muscle tone and function.
In Gill’s case she wears her suit all day and night and the impact on her lifestyle has been significant.
“Since I started wearing my suit I am able to function day to day, my pain has reduced and so have my dislocations.
I started to have problems with the connective tissue in my feet which was causing a great deal of pain and problems with walking and balance. I was afraid I would end up in a wheelchair.
I purchased the DMO® Dorsiflex Sock and the change has had quite an impact, along with using the full body suit they have given me my independence back. Living without extreme pain is huge and I can now drive, volunteer and get out and live my life.
Four years on from receiving my first suit I am pleased to say that my pain is still reduced, and I can still function day to day. Most importantly, I am managing to walk and not use a wheelchair.
Thank you, DM Orthotics, for supplying both my suit and socks I can’t recommend them highly enough they have changed my life.”
