2000-kilometre journey to Redruth to get a super hero suit
A mother and son from Zagreb in Croatia have travelled more than 2000 kilometres to Cornwall to get a special suit fitted at our factory in Redruth.
Four-year-old Jakov Grgic suffers from scoliosis and muscle hypotonia – resulting in his spine being curved. To improve his posture and mobility, a special ‘super hero’ suit has been manufactured that allows him to move whilst providing the support his body needs.
Jakov’s mother, Vedrana, decided to make the long journey after thoroughly researching our product range. Export Manager and Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Pam Cowans met them there and guided them through the assessment and prescription process.
“Jakov has a very large cobb angle of his spine but isn’t able to have surgery,” said Pam. “We discussed what he needed at length, measured him and then our team got to work with their sewing machines. Three days later the suit was ready – made specially in the same colours as Spiderman’s, because he’s Jakov’s favourite super hero. The fit was perfect and there was an immediate difference in spinal position and posture. Jakov has to wear it for at least 13 hours a day to ensure his spine can grow in a better position but he forgot about it straight after it was put on, more interested in his lollipop and the video he was watching on his mum’s phone. That’s exactly what we want. It should feel as normal as having a second skin.”
Vedrana Grgic was delighted.
“The products are outstanding and so are the people who work here,” she said. “It’s obvious that they all really love their work and went out of their way to help us. Pam Cowans gave us a lot of information about how the suit worked, how to use it in the best way, what we could do to help our son get used to it and how to access the ongoing support that DMO offers.
“The suit is beautiful and Jakov doesn’t see it as a medical device but as something fun to wear. We’re very happy DMO customers.”
During the same week that the Grgics visited, a family of three from Israel also came to the factory.
“We found out about the DMO products after doing a lot of research and decided to bring our nine-year-old daughter for a fitting here,” said Benny Tsach. “We believe we are the first in our country to make the journey but are very happy to have come. The team are very experienced and professional.”
