Meet the team – Patricia McCotter Clinical Manager
How long have you been with DM Orthotics and what is your role?
I started working with DM Orthotics in March 2015 as a Clinical Specialist Orthotist, in January 2016 I began my role as Clinical Manager.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When I was little I always wanted to be a Vet as I had a love of animals, this changed however when I discovered “prosthetics and orthotics”.
What is the best thing about the job?
I love meeting fellow clinicians who strive to provide the best quality care for their patients. The patient contact has always been what I loved about being an Orthotist, I enjoy the challenge of working with them and my other AHPs to provide solutions to the problems we are presented with. DM Orthotics have a team of highly experienced clinicians, manufacturing, management and administration staff, together forming a brilliant company which I have the pleasure of working for.
What have you gained from working at DM Orthotics?
I have in the last year gained greater confidence as a presenter/teacher as the role involves a lot of public speaking. I have loved the challenge of undertaking my new role as Clinical Manager and very much look forward to the future working with such an innovative company.
If there was something you could do to change the industry, what would it be?
Lots of clinicians continue to do things as they have always done it, as it appears to work and they are reluctant to try other treatment options. I think the only way we will ever change this mind-set is to continue providing a great quality product and to back this up with ongoing research to prove the effectiveness of our orthoses.
Do you have any role models or people you look up to?
I have had the pleasure of working with some wonderful people over the years who have taught me so much, not only clinically but with their dedication to the patients which often would far surpass what was expected of them.
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
I love property shows and would love to buy an old wreak and totally renovate it, as I am a dab hand at DIY!
What have you always wanted to do, but never done?
Go to Nashville.
Which is your favourite DM Orthotics product and why?
That is a difficult one to answer, as I love them all! For a versatile orthosis, the shorts would win as they can have such a great effect on the core together with upper and lower limbs. Our e-Step is another wonderful product which has the benefit of combining the joint support, stabilisation, proprioceptive and sensory feedback provided by a DMO orthosis with the active movement assistance of an FES system.
