“ I love hearing about new achievements my patients have made, or new activities or hobbies they have taken up with the help of their orthosis.

Holly has been a qualified physiotherapist since completing her studies in 2010.

She has worked for DM Orthotics as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist since 2018 area and her areas of speciality include: Paediatrics, Complex Neurodisability and Postural management including seating.

I always knew I wanted to be in a caring profession, and in my early teens realised Physiotherapy was for me. We have several Physios in our family; my Great-Aunt told me stories of rehabilitating soldiers during the war, getting creative with limited resources to motivate and challenge her patients to recover. I was drawn to the problem-solving nature of Physiotherapy and how every patient will require a unique approach to really unlock their potential.

We asked Holly when you think back to all the people you’ve helped, are there any cases that stand out?

The cases that stand out for me are those where a patient or loved one possibly hasn’t expected much from the orthosis, maybe was a little sceptical, but can see an immediate change. For example, I recently fitted a DMO suit for a child with hypotonia, poor trunk and head control. The improvement in posture was immediate and the child was able to hold her head up to look at her mum.

Mum was able to reduce her handling and support for her little one, and they could focus on smiling and chatting to each other instead. Here the DMO helped not only the child’s posture, but also her communication with her mother and those around her. The look of pure joy and the belly laughs between mum and daughter were the best!

We asked Holly what do you enjoy most about your job?

Seeing the difference that DMO can make to peoples’ lives. It’s as simple as that!  I love hearing about new achievements my patients have made, or new activities or hobbies they have taken up with the help of their orthosis.

It also helps that we have a wonderful team, from clinicians to admin staff to the amazing people making the orthoses by hand. It’s such a unique job, one that I would never have thought of when I was training, but I’m so glad I’m here!
