On 26^th August I had the pleasure of presenting at a study day “Dynamic Splinting of the Paediatric Upper Limb”. This was held at Thomas Wolsey School, Ipswich and was run jointly between DM Orthotics and Occupational Therapists from the Integrated Community Paediatric Services at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. DM Orthotics has worked with this team for many years, and we were keen to share knowledge and experience with other therapists in the area.

It was a great day packed with information. We covered:

• Theory and evidence base underpinning the use of dynamic splinting
• Applications to patients typically presenting to an Upper Limb caseload
• Different prescriptions and how to build the perfect orthosis for your patient
• Pathways and routes to funding

The team at Thomas Wolsey are hugely experienced in prescribing DM Orthotics upper limb orthoses, along with suits and others in the DMO family. We had some great audience participation and everyone loved trying on the gloves and gauntlets for themselves.

Participants left with increased knowledge about the place for dynamic splinting for an upper limb caseload, and were armed with evidence and funding advice in order to add this intervention into their practice. Personally I learned a huge amount about upper limb assessment and ways to measure outcome and impact of intervention.

This was an exciting new deep-dive for us at DM Orthotics, where we know our suits are the most popular orthoses, but our upper limb orthotics are real unsung heroes with less widespread use, especially in paediatric departments. Working alongside Highly Specialist Occupational Therapists from the team at Thomas Wolsey was a privilege.
