Meet David

David has been using the DMO® Custom Dorsiflex Sock for over four years. The sock orthosis helps him lift his foot, improving his balance and movement issues due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Multiple Sclerosis is a lifelong condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance.

In David’s case the condition causes drop foot, a muscular weakness that makes it difficult to lift the foot enough to allow it to clear the ground when walking. This can cause the foot or toes to catch resulting in trips and falls.

David says,

“The seemingly simple issue of not being able to lift a foot causes me to fall, lose balance and drag my leg. The DM Orthotics sock orthosis goes a long way to resolving all those issues.”

David found out about DM Orthotics after one of our Clinicians visited the Samson Centre for MS. The Centre, based in Surrey, gives practical and emotional support to people living with MS.

DM Orthotics’ clinical team of physiotherapists and orthotists have expertise in a wide range of conditions, including David’s, and often visit clinics to train, share knowledge or measure. They can give face-to-face or virtual assessments to consider whether a dynamic movement orthosis will be of benefit to a patient.

David explains,

“Initially a DM Orthotics Clinician showed me samples of their orthoses to check for suitability, then once it was identified that the DMO® Custom Dorsiflex Sock would be of benefit I was measured for the custom-made sock. The clinician was very helpful and professional and even explained the order process.

“The sock gives me so much more confidence and independence than any other product I have tried. It is unobtrusive and fits seamlessly into my lifestyle. More importantly, it works better than any other orthoses I have used. Once I am wearing it, I forget it is there which is as it should be.

“I hate relying on other people and the fabric sock orthosis reduces the need for me to do this in so many ways. It is straightforward to don and completely unobtrusive. It can also be worn whilst I exercise which is a big plus.

“Whilst my condition cannot be cured, it has given me more ownership of the symptoms – I control my MS, it doesn’t control me.”

The below video shows how our DMO Custom® Dorsiflex Sock helps David to walk without a stick.  Note how he has better foot clearance, stability and is able to turn safely.
