Spinal Muscular Atrophy
The NHS defines spinal muscular atrophy as “Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic condition that makes the muscles weaker and causes problems with movement. It’s a serious condition that gets worse over time, but there are treatments to help manage the symptoms” (NHS, 2020).
Our DMO® products can help patients with SMA through postural management and by helping to slow down Scoliosis progression. This depends on the presentation, the time of intervention and other contributing factors. A DMO® Suit or DMO® Scoliosis suit would be an orthosis of choice to help patients in this group.
Another product that this patient group has found helpful is the DMO® glove which will aim to improve upper limb function through its unique design and panelling used.

DMO® Custom Postural Scoliosis Suit
DM Orthotics Ltd has two Scoliosis Suits in its range, the DMO® Custom Postural Scoliosis suit and the DMO® Custom Structural Scoliosis Suit. Our DMO® custom orthoses come in a range of colours and with a wide range of reinforcements to help support and control movement, tailored to the individual’s needs. Custom products also let customers have their own openings, zips, toileting etc to make it easier for daily life. This device has been certified in accordance with OEKO-TEX Standard 100.
DMO® Custom Glove / Gauntlet with sleeve
The DMO® Custom Glove is designed to improve conditions which induce either high or low muscle tone and tremor. Its unique design rotates the arm into a functional, comfortable position; repositions the thumb and maintains correct alignment of the wrist. Additional support through the fingers opens the hand in high tone conditions while providing support for those conditions that result in low muscle tone. Our custom dynamic movement orthoses® are fully made-to-measure and are bespoke to you. It is a patient specific prescription provided by a prescribing clinician.
