What is a Dynamic Movement Orthosis?

DM Orthotics is a world-leader in the design and manufacture of its patented Dynamic Movement Orthoses® (DMO®).   In this blog we explain what a dynamic movement orthosis is and how it works.

Our history

DM Orthotics has been developing its range of Dynamic Movement Orthoses® since it was established in 2005.  Clinical Specialist Orthotist and Managing Director Martin Matthews is a leading authority on the use of Dynamic Movement Orthoses® that help both adults and children manage the physical effects of their neurological, musculoskeletal and genetic conditions.

Over the last 20 years he has developed a significant body of research supporting the use of dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses with the single aim of improving function and encouraging independence for the user.  Our DMO® product ranges are the culmination of this work.

What is a Dynamic Movement Orthosis?

Dynamic Movement Orthoses® are wearable fabric medical devices designed to improve postural control, improve sensory and proprioceptive feedback and aid alignment of body parts.

DM Orthotics DMO®s come in a range of designs from a glove, for improved hand and upper limb function, to a full body suit.  The product and design will depend on the needs of the patient.

Our DMO®s are made from a soft, flexible compression-based fabric and worn next to the skin.  This lightweight, breathable and strong material is combined with reinforcement panels made from a powernet material.

How does a Dynamic Movement orthosis work?

The compression from the fabric increases pressure on certain muscle groups and improves proprioception leading to better awareness of the affected part of the body.

The resistance created by the additional layers of strategically placed reinforcing materials, position the body into improved postural alignment. This creates a new biomechanical state which combined with enhanced proprioception, stimulates and adjusts the neuro-sensory system, training muscles to work with improved tone, strength and performance.  The biomechanical influence encourages improved movement control.

Who can benefit from a Dynamic Movement Orthosis?

Our Dynamic Movement Orthoses® can help adults and children with a number of conditions including:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Scoliosis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Stroke
  • Retts Syndrome
  • Hemiplegia
  • Spina Bifida
  • Quadraplegia
  • Hypermobility
  • Ataxia
  • Dystonia
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes

The impact these fabric orthoses have will depend on the individual, but they have been proven to offer several physical benefits including:

  • Improved posture
  • Pain relief
  • Improved movement control
  • Decreased associated reactions
  • Improved proximal and/or distal function
  • Enhanced function
  • Reduced involuntary movements
  • Enhanced therapy sessions
  • Helps fatigue management

DMO® Custom products are individually made-to-measure, and all fastenings, openings and reinforcements are individually prescribed according to the functional needs and preferences of each individual patient.

We also offer a pre-sized range of orthoses similar to our DMO® custom range called DMO® Essentials. These products are made up of a vest, shorts, leggings and single or double shoulder orthoses created to provide improved comfort, posture, and range of movement to the user.
